Just as the title of this post says, men's shoes. In preparation for the start of 6th Junior High my son decided he wanted new shoes. Didn't need them, but wanted them. It's all part of a bigger change I've seen in him where starting a few month's ago he started to really notice and care about how he looks, how he smells, his hair, his outfits, etc..He tried a new hairstyle this summer and grew out the top a bit so he could try 'fluffy' hair. He even got out the blow dryer, used gel and hair spray. He's had the same haircut since I've been in charge of telling the stylist how to cut his hair. not completely military short, but close. I really felt bad for him because the first time he decided to express his style in his hair one of his friends made fun of him. I only know this because he went back to combing it the normal way and I asked him hey, did someone say something. Yup. Ugh....I didn't want that for him. Other kids can suck sometimes. But the shoes.....kids sizes go up to a 7. We just kept buying whatever style of ad.i.das shoes he liked bigger and bigger over the years until we reached that cut off. So, we had to look in the men's section for the first time....although I learned that apparently men's shoes do start sizing that cross over w/ boys i.e. we could have done this sooner, but why? I also learned men's shoes are twice the price.
It's just the start of a lot of changes for him. He grew a lot over the summer and his head is taller than my chin now. I used to tuck him under and give him a hug but now, I can't do that. I remember when my girl was this age she was still a 'little kid'.....basically the timing right before puberty when things really go haywire...how this goes for boys will be a new experience, but I already see signs. His face has changed shape, he's taller. Thankfully he's not a naturally stinky kid, hope it stays that way. He's been using spray deodorant in addition to stick, but this time he wanted to go to the store and smell them all, and pick which one he liked best.
For him, the start of school was a bit of a mixed bag....his school time start is 8:55 and I drove him to school just the first day. He was exhausted when he came home, decided to still go play, then by night time melt down city. I hadn't seen that in a while where he was just angry. Slamming doors, shouting, throwing things. His report out was quite negative talking about how some kids are so dumb. In fact, he sleep shouts a lot and I've heard "You are so dumb!" a few times now. Thankfully since that first day it's only improved.... his attitude, his demeanor. A surprising but great thing is that he's really excited about band. At instrument fitting his band teacher recommended saxophone, and he's talked a lot about learning the notes, wanting a tutor, etc.. I'm really happy to see his interest blossom, as this is the first time he's really done anything with instruments. He's always been so focused on sports.
Also the 'drama' is picking up about girls with his friends. He went to the park yesterday and came home to announce he's got some tea. Apparently his best friend James likes this girl and told her in a text chain. Then the girl liked that text (or something like that). But, I guess another kid Marshall liked this girl and somehow Marshall found out while the boys were at the park. He also said they were talking about how James can be a knucklehead (my words). While my son was sitting there telling us this story, my girl was sitting there teasing him again about Cora--this girl in GT class that perhaps likes my son but he insists he doesn't like anyone at school. They have their first school back to school dance this Friday and he says he wants to go. And so it begins.....
At least this morning I got a win. I still drive him to the bus stop and I noticed this morning that the few other girls were standing by themselves. A parent had walked them the first few days of school and stayed at the stop with them, but today it was just the girls. I said " It looks like the kids dumped their parents, they are here by themselves"....and he turns, looks and me and says, "I'll never dump you". Heart swell. Those are the moments that I truly cherish....and I know he means it. He's very expressive with his words and his affection.
My girl expresses her love by saying 'I love you' a whole lot and body language. The hugs the hugs.....she asks for hugs at least every day if not multiple times a day. Since school has started I've noticed the increase. I have to say though, the transition for her has gone really well. The first three days she wanted dropped off at Macy's who lives close to school. Then a group of them walked together into school. The first day we got up at 5:45 am so she could wear her hair down. She's got those gorgeous curls but it's a process to wear it down. The night before we tried out a plan to wash it and use a blow dryer diffuser to shorten the time it takes. It worked out perfectly! After she came home the next day I got the complete run down of her teachers, what she did, etc. and I asked her what were two words to describe her first day of high school were and she said 1) Fun and 2) Confusing. That sounds about right. I only cried once during this transition and it was the morning right before I took her to Macy's house while she was getting ready. I envisioned her walking away from me and towards the school and I just teared up. I quickly wiped them away so she wouldn't notice because this day was about her. I just needed to get it together.
The Macy's drop off wasn't the best option going forward because in order for her to get there in time, we had to leave our house at 6:35. If we drive directly to school we can leave here at 6:50. Those extra 15 minutes make a difference in the morning. We are still figuring out our routine because there are multiple places to do drop off at the HS, so after she goes in I watch and look to see what might make sense going forward. This morning we tried a different route which stressed her out because she thrives on routine. I said let's just try it and see. No issues but I suspect we'll be going right back to dropping off across from the school so she can walk in the door she wants to. The other thing I had to decide too was do I wake my son up prior to us doing the school drop off since hers is first? I didn't feel comfortable leaving him sleep while we run over to the HS so have been waking him up before we go. But, he needs more sleep so yesterday as I was talking w/ Aarav's mom she said why do I wake him up? She was sure he'd be fine, etc.. so that reassurance let me try it this morning and he woke up on his own at 7:30. I was already back just after 7 (so gone like 15 minutes). That extra sleep and allowing him to wake up naturally really made a difference in his demeanor this morning. Likely we'll do that going forward, but I'm such a nervous nelly about safety, the what ifs, etc. It still bothers me, so I'll just have to decide what I'm comfortable doing.
On the way to school this morning, this just shows my girl's personality. We were driving on the street right outside of our neighborhood and we pulled up right behind a car at the stop light. The car then inches forward leaving about a 5 foot gap. I was looking out the window when that happened, and then looked over at her. She then looks at me, moves just her eyes and looks at the car in front of us, pauses, then looks back at me....I then inch forward to close the space. I look back at her and she then nods. That made me laugh outloud. That is just so HER. No words. But, I still got exactly what she meant. That kid.
Overall I'm really pleased and happy about how the transition has gone. It has felt a bit stressful trying to figure out our new normal, which we are still trying to do with timing, etc.. but the kids have hopped right back into school mode and are already doing homework. My son still keeps saying it doesn't 'feel' like he's back in school yet, but all in due time. My calendar his kicked up with school activities, there was already a Parent meeting this past Monday for new to Band.
We also celebrated a 14th birthday before school started. What.the heck. Time just keeps moving. and fast. I catch glimpses of pictures in my phone or videos of when they were littler and I'm like seriously how did we get here so fast? My girl is a grown kid. She's 5'7 1/2" and doctor said she's still got more to go. This year she didn't plan months in advance for her birthday, which was typical of her in the past. However, she did finally decide that she wanted her smaller friend group-6 others-to meet up at the pickleball strip mall place we found. It's cheap and there is hardly anyone there. She wanted a cookiecake from sam.s that we didn't even preorder. She and Amy bought icing and she decorated it herself. Dang I just realized I didn't even take a picture of it!! We even had the 1 and 4 candle on it--it was so cute! It was just so casual and since I stopped sending out birthday postcards after 12, I didn't take the 50 pictures I normally do. My girl didn't even plan ahead to get balloons and plates until the morning of. Things have certainly changed.
And me...well, I've been obsessively working on my project plan and next steps for the remodel with my new favorite online tool. It's been unbelievably helpful in discovering many things, one of which is how what my designer can deliver is not really what I need from him but that it still costs me a lot of money because I still keep trying. With this tool I can do more of the thinking and exploring on my own--ask so many question/get suggestions/put things together/find ways to limit what I use the designer going forward for since he is hourly. Now, that doesn't mean my project is moving any faster, we are still waiting for cabinet boxes to be installed, but by golly they will be exactly what I want. I've thoroughly researched it and understand what I am getting for the money. The Value, that's a lot of what I'm discovering too....what is valuable to me and what is not. Like is it worth it to pay extra to avoid the factory UV finish that turns the draw wood yellow. Maybe. This may be boring stuff for some but diving deep is something I've really enjoyed in this process....now, does it create a lot of delay and some stress, maybe....but if my mind feels better, who cares, right? It's already been over a year, there's no urgency now to rush. The good thing is I've been able to plan ahead for space planning, furniture layout, et.c. and already went looking yesterday at a sectional style and fabric. This is something I would have for sure paid someone to help me figure out.
Right now we are good. The initial abrupt change of school starting is wearing off and we will slowly ease back in. My son will start his new Fall soccer season soon, my girl is still planning to go out for wrestling, Fall will come, heat will ease up.....looking forward to it all.
